Meta’s Facebook and Instagram experienced a two-hour outage Tuesday due to a technical issue. Users had been booted out of Facebook and Instagram and were not able to log in. The global outage affected hundreds of thousands of users globally. The effects of the outage were noticeable starting at 10 a.m. ET (1500 GMT).
According to Downdetector.com., the outage produced more than 550,000 reports of disruptions for Facebook and about 92,000 for Instagram. Downdetector.com also reported an outage for WhatsApp and Threads, although reportedly much less in scope.

A spokesperson for Meta explained the problem and resolution on its social media rival X today:

Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services. We resolved the issue … for everyone who was impacted, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said in a post on X, without elaborating on the issue.

Although hacking activities could have been a cause of the outage, the White House National Security Council clearly indicated it was “not aware of any specific malicious cyber activity at this time, a spokesperson said.”

Meta has on average about 3.19 billion daily active users using all of its apps daily.
