Tiobe September 2020 Index for Programming Languages

C++ has moved up the programming language ladder for the September 2020 Tiobe Index. C++ is now the “fastest growing language of the pack (+1.48%).” C++ growth is more than other popular languages such as R (+1.33%) and C# (+1.18%). Java has moved down the programming language index by -3.18%. The Index is an indicator of the “popularity of programming languages.”

In August 2003, C++ peaked at 17.53% being close to the number #2 position and becoming “winner of the programming language award of 2003.” C++ steadily declined in popularity until this month’s index showed otherwise.

The Tiobe Index definition is especially useful for programmers:

“The index can be used to check whether your programming skills are still up to date or to make a strategic decision about what programming language should be adopted when starting to build a new software system.”
