Apple Intelligence is Apple’s latest venture into AI centered computing. Through Apple silicon, Apple Intelligence, the personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, can accomplish tasks such as understanding and creating language and images, taking action across apps, and drawing from personal context to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks.

To further examine Apple Intelligence’s new features let’s start off with Writing Tools which is built into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. With Writing Tools users can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text when they write for Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.

Apple Intelligence rewrite creates different versions of what users have written for differing needs. Proofread corrects grammar, word choice, sentence structure and also permits editing. Summarize condenses text in the form of a digestible paragraph, bulleted key points, a table, or a list.

Similar features are integrated in Mail including Priority Messages, email summaries and Smart Reply. Notifications have been enhanced with Priority Notifications, notification summaries and Reduce Interruptions. Notes and Phone apps allows users to record, transcribe, and summarize audio.

Image Playground permits users to communicate and express themselves in creative ways:

With Image Playground, users can create fun images in seconds, choosing from three styles: Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. Image Playground is easy to use and built right into apps including Messages. It’s also available in a dedicated app, perfect for experimenting with different concepts and styles.

Even Siri is more natural, more contextually relevant, and more personal, for simplifying and accelerating everyday tasks:

It can follow along if users stumble over words and maintain context from one request to the next. Additionally, users can type to Siri, and switch between text and voice to communicate with Siri in whatever way feels right for the moment.

Although Apple Intelligence heavily uses on-device processing, for more complex processing, Private Cloud Compute ensures the privacy and security of Apple devices when data is sent to the cloud:

With Private Cloud Compute, Apple Intelligence can flex and scale its computational capacity and draw on larger, server-based models for more complex requests. These models run on servers powered by Apple silicon, providing a foundation that allows Apple to ensure that data is never retained or exposed.

ChatGPT is integrated into Apple platforms iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia allowing users to access its expertise — as well as its image- and document-understanding capabilities. ChatGPT is available to use with Siri and Writing Tools. Privacy is paramount with users IP addresses being obscured, and OpenAI not storing requests. ChatGPT will be available for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year.
