Intel Introduces First Neural Network Processor for AI Technology

Intel recently announced a new processor for neural network processing for artificial intelligence applications. The Intel Nervana Neural Network Processor (NNP), a silicon destined to

“develop entirely new classes of AI applications that maximize the amount of data processed and enable customers to find greater insights – transforming their businesses.”

The Intel Nervana technology, will increase data processing capabilities and allow customers insight in decision making. Four current computing areas will benefit from this technology.

In health care, “earlier diagnosis and greater accuracy” will become possible for health decisions. Social media will benefit users with a more personalized experience and advertisers with more targeted users.

Autonomous vehicles will be more fully developed due to the progression of accelerated learning. The new chip technology will also have a major influence in processing the mass volume of data involved in weather prediction.

Ultimately, artificial intelligence performance will increase 100 times by 2020 as a result of the expansion of Intel Nervana NNP products. Intels investment in AI and also neuromorphic and quantum computing will help facilitate “large-scale computing applications of the future.”

Quantum computers are defined as,

“powerful computers harnessing the unique capabilities of a large number of qubits (quantum bits), as opposed to binary bits, to perform exponentially more calculations in parallel.”

Whereas neuromorphic chips are defined as,

“inspired by the human brain, [neuromorphic chips] will help computers make decisions based on patterns and associations.”
