The wait is over, Android Pie 9.0 officially debuted today, “powered by AI for a smarter, simple experience that adapts to you.” Introduced earlier than expected, Android Pie 9.0 guarantees to “work better for you—the more you use it.”
With features such as adaptive battery which prioritizes most used app battery usage, adaptive brightness which recognizes and sets the brightness according to previous usage. App Actions predicts actions from your context and later displays them on your phone. This fall slices will be available. Slice show relevant information when you are using your favorite apps.
An especially noteworthy feature us the new system navigation that includes a single home button that simplifies tasks using one hand:
“With a single, clean home button, you can swipe up to see a newly designed Overview, the spot where at a glance you have full-screen previews of your recently used apps.”
Smart Text Selection uses predictive analysis to determine selected text meaning and therefore predict appropriate actions.
Technology is more available than ever before, with this comes the possibility of too much technology. A new Android Pie feature addresses this issue and somewhat solves it if only for Android phones. Digital Wellbeing is such a feature for Android Pie. It includes a Dashboard, App Timer, Do Not Disturb and Wind Down. Digital Wellbeing will be available for Pixel device in the fall and other devices later this year.
Security, always a vital issue has been increased mainly due to Android Pie hardening the platform and introducing an improved security model for biometrics. Hardware security has been bolstered by a secure, dedicated chip. Privacy issues have been adressed by TLS by default and DNS over TLS for private web communications.
As for availability, Pixel phones can currently obtain the update and other devices can also receive the update by the end of this fall, if they were previously enrolled in the beta program.
