For the second year in a row, South Korea placed first in the annual Bloomberg Innovation Index 2019. The Index analyzes, which initially examined 200 global economies, “analyzes dozens of criteria using seven metrics, including research and development spending, manufacturing capability and concentration of high-tech public companies.” Bloomberg has conducted the Innovation Index for the last seven years. Qualifying countries are ranked from 1 to 60.
Results are based on a 0-100 scale based on seven equally weighted categories. 95 countries were eliminated ultimately because of failing to report data for a minimum of six qualifying categories. This year the United States made the top ten unlike last year’s results which were not in the top ten. For the 2019 Index, ten economies became part of the Index due to more available, solid data.
