Google recently retired smart messaging app, Google Allo. Earlier this year, Google paused investment in Allo and combined some of its more popular features such as Smart Reply, GIFs and desktop support with Messages which momentum has increased lately. Messages a messaging app for android phones currently has 175 million users. Google Allo integrated the machine learning focused Google Assistant into messaging.
Users have until March 2019 to transfer existing Allo app conversation history. Allo messages and media can be backed up and users can “restore that information on a new phone as long as you use the same phone number.” This is true except for incognito chats and settings. Backups are only available on mobile and will be deleted after 40 days after uninstalling the Allo app.
In an official Google statement concerning Allo’s discontinued state, Google elaborated:
“We’re excited by the progress we’ve made with our communications experience over the past few years, and ready to take what we’ve learned from Allo and put it to work to make Messages even better.”
