Available for pre-order Friday, September 14 and in stores Friday, September 21, the Apple iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max bring more advanced features than ever before to iPhone users: A 5.8-Inch and 6.5-Inch All-Screen Design, with Powerful A12 Bionic Chip and a Breakthrough Dual Camera System. In Apple’s own words, the iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max are “taking the vision for the future of the smartphone to a new level.”

iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max feature Super Retina displays “the biggest display ever in an iPhone.” The two phones include 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch display sizes, a custom OLED design support Dolby Vision and HDR10, front and back glass design, splash and water resistance of IP68 for up to 2 meters for 30 minutes, a million-to-one contrast ratio and iOS system-wide color management. The iPhone Xs Max has the largest display ever in an iPhone, over 3 million pixels for videos, movies and games.

The iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max could also qualify as phablets since the definition includes devices with a “diagonal display measurement between 5.1 inches (130 mm) and 7 inches (180 mm) assuming a 16:9 aspect ratio” according to Wikipedia. Yet in the same article this idea is disputed (5.1-7 inches required for phablets) since some devices are more compact than 16:9 aspect ratio devices with equivalent diagonal screen sizes.

Defined as the smartest and most powerful chip in a smartphone, the A12 Bionic, developed by Apple, is the “first 7-nanometer chip ever in a smartphone that delivers industry-leading performance in a more power-efficient design.” Some of the more outstanding A12 Bionic features include six-core fusion architecture, four efficiency cores, a four-core GPU, Image Signal Processor (ISP) and video encoder. These more powerful features improve dynamics for games, photography, video editing and graphics-intensive apps.

Part of the A12 Bionic is the next-generation Neural Engine which is used for advanced machine learning for photography and augmented reality. The Neural Engine’s eight-core design enables 5 trillion operations per second. This accomplishment produces ARKit faster plane detection and real-time machine learning. NE now integrates Core ML, which empowers developers to build apps that utilize this highly efficient machine learning engine.

The iPhone Xs 12MP Dual Camera System “advances depth segmentation using the Neural Engine, Smart HDR creating photos with high dynamic range and great image detail, advanced bokeh quality in Portrait mode photos and dynamic depth of field that is user adjustable in the Photos app.” Video Capture in the iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max is the best quality video capture available in a smartphone.

Other pivotal video features include low-light performance and video stabilization, highlight and shadow detail in video modes up to 30 frames per second and stereo sound video recording using four built-in mics.

Face ID the “most secure facial authentication system ever in a smartphone,” uses the TrueDepth camera system with advanced precision depth-sensing technology to access iPhone, use Apple Pay and gain access to secure apps. iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max comes equipped with iOS 12. iOS 12 has interesting or new features such as new AR experiences, rediscovering and sharing photos, new Animoji and Memoji, Screen Time and Siri Shortcuts to name a few.
