Google Perspective Gives Perspective to Online Comments

Online social media, news outlets and other forms of user input mechanisms create the possibility of "toxic" conversations to erupt and create an atmosphere not conducive to constructive criticism. Because of this situation, Google created a developer API called Perspective to help stop the threat of abuse and harassment online

Originally part of a collaborative research project called Conversation-AI, Perspective uses machine learning as a tool for online discussion: "The API uses machine learning models to score the perceived impact a comment might have on a conversation. Developers and publishers can use this score to give realtime feedback to commenters or help moderators do their job, or allow readers to more easily find relevant information..."

Google has two reading and writing examples readily available for online comment analysis. The reading experiment organizes comments for three difficult topics in online discussions. The writing experiment involves entering a sample comment for potential “toxic" content. Wikipedia, the New York Times, the Economist and the Guardian are already researching or building applications that use this technology. Perspective has a Github page for further exploration.
